Biodegradable polymers derived from renewable resources are considered as promising alternatives to
petroleum-based polymer. Among the biodegradable polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) has attracted attention due to having
properties such as biodegradable, environment friendly, and biocompatible. Although PLA has these advantages, it can
not be used in many applications due to its low gas barrier properties, thermal stability, brittle and cost. In this study,
PLA/PEG/silica obtained from rice husk composite films were prepared using solvent casting method. The thermal and
structural properties of the prepared composite films were determined by SEM (scanning electron microscope), TGA
(thermogravimetric analysis) and water absorption capacity test. According to results of analysis, the addition of silica to
the PLA-PEG films improved the thermal stability and increased the water absorption capacities of PLA-PEG films.

In this study, polymeric Nafion membrane and inorganic mesoporous silica was used to prepare composite
membranes by using solvent-casting method for PEM fuel cells. Mesoporous silica (SCMS) was doped as 1 and 3 wt.%.
Structural properties of the composite membrane were investigated by Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Scanning
electron microscopy (SEM), water uptake and gas permeability tests with pristine Nafion membrane. Results showed that
adding of 1 wt% silica SCMS into Nafion has improved the thermal stability of the structure, increased water uptake
capability of membrane and decreased gas permeability of the structure.
